JAMAL PRACHA
SOLUBILITY LAB PROCEDURE

This was an assignment for science where I made a procedure for an experiment to test the solubility soap and fat in water and oil. The purpose of this assignment was to help us communicate to other people how to conduct an experiment. I completed this assignment after completing three drafts. We were given a week to complete this assignment.
The requirements of this assignment were to write a procedure in a clear way that fully describes what somebody has to do in the experiment. My procedure had a drawing that showed a model of the experiment set up. My procedure also had a list of materials and safety hazards related to the experiment. I had to make an easy to understand way to conduct the experiment. I had to make three drafts while most people only made two drafts. This is because my first final draft got ruined.
The biggest challenge I faced while completing this assignment was when I was doing my final draft and I left it on my desk to go do something. While I was gone my little brother scribbled on my final draft. I was really angry at him but knew that it was my fault for leaving it there. This was the biggest challenge because I had to restart the whole assignment again. To advocate for myself or find a solution for myself I asked for some help from my dad. My dad helped me overcome this challenge by taking a piece of construction paper and putting lines on them. I used the lines to rewrite my whole procedure. All I had to do after that was just rewrite the procedure which finished I before school started.
My first artifact is my draft that got scribbled on by my little brother. This was going to be the final draft until it got scribbled on with permanent marker. Some classroom knowledge that I learned from this artifact is a centrifuge tube. This tube was part of the experiment because we put water, oil, soap, or fat in it and then we shook it for two minutes. From the artifact I learned about solubility. Solubility means if a substance is able to dissolve or not. We were trying to see if soap and fat were the same substance and to test that we had to see they both had the same properties. Properties are the density, color, melting point, solubility, hardness, taste and etc. If two substances have every single property in common, then they are the same substance. In the experiment we had to test the solubility of butter and fat to see if they were the same substance.
I think that I grew in communication because my procedure was numbered in steps which makes it easy for my reader to see what step to do. I also think I grew in being communicative by using captions to explain the drawing I made of how the setup of the experiment should be like. To me communication means to tell or show something to someone else in any technique so that the other person can understand what you are saying. So in this assignment I wrote my procedure to communicate to my reader what they had to do in a specific way for each step. So for the cleanup procedure I wrote that you had to put the liquids go down the drain, solids go in the trash and the centrifuge tubes go in the white bin.
This is my second artifact. It is a rewrite of my final draft that got ruined by getting scribbled on with permanent marker by my brother. This draft is easier to read I learned from this assignment about soluble and insoluble. Soluble means that a substance can dissolve in another substance. Insoluble means that a substance cannot dissolve in another substance. The results of the experiment showed that fat is insoluble in water but soap is soluble in water. I also learned that solute is the substance being dissolved and that the solvent is the substance dissolving the solute. In my procedure the soap and fat are the solutes and the water and oil are the solvents.
I think that I grew in creativity because I used a creative solution to solve my problem. I was also creative because I wrote my procedure on yellow construction paper which very few people did. I think this was creative because instead of giving up I rewrote my whole draft. If I were not a student at the STEM school then I would have come to school the next day empty-handed but here creativity means to come up with a new solution to your problem, and that requires hard work and thought. So I thought about rewriting my draft on a yellow paper because my other draft got ruined. Rewriting my draft took a lot of hard work but it paid off in the end.
By completing this assignment successfully this implies that I am capable of writing and developing a clear and descriptive procedure to conduct an experiment that other students and other people can use. This assignment can benefit me as a future citizen because it helped me enhance my skills of communicating things to other people in a way that is clear and understandable. In this project I made my steps clear and I made sure I did the procedure one step at a time.
